This is the most common type of hernia, occurring when tissue pushes through a weak spot in the lower abdominal wall into the groin. It affects men more frequently due to the natural weakness created by the inguinal canal.

An umbilical hernia develops when part of the intestine protrudes through the abdominal wall near the belly button. It is commonly seen in infants but can also occur in adults, particularly those who are overweight or have had multiple pregnancies.

This type occurs at the site of a previous abdominal surgery, where the scar tissue is weaker than surrounding muscle. It can develop months or even years after the original surgery, especially with heavy lifting or strain. A bulge appears directly along or near the surgical scar.

A hiatal hernia occurs when the upper part of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm into the chest cavity. Unlike other hernias, it does not cause a visible external bulge but instead leads to internal symptoms. Common signs include acid reflux, heartburn, and chest discomfort after eating.

A femoral hernia develops when tissue pushes through the femoral canal in the upper thigh, just below the groin crease. It is more common in women, particularly due to a wider pelvic structure. The bulge is often smaller and less noticeable than an inguinal hernia, which can delay diagnosis.

A ventral hernia refers to any hernia that occurs through an opening in the abdominal muscles, excluding the groin region. It can arise spontaneously or following surgery, trauma, or repeated strain on the abdominal wall. Patients typically notice a bulge somewhere along the midline of the abdomen.
